The Workshop

The Workshop is situated opposite Asiaq’s main building.

The Workshop’s responsibilities

The main responsibility of Asiaq’s technicians is maintenance of the climate and hydrological measuring stations that are run by Asiaq in connection with various surveys throughout Greenland. We also provide and maintain different types of measuring stations on commission.

Asiaq’s technicians carry out installation and repair of the electronic measuring equipment used by the surveyors on their field trips. The Workshop is also responsible for contributing to Asiaq’s other projects with knowledge on electronics and equipment.

International data collection guidelines – adjusted to the Arctic

The Workshop aims to develop Asiaq’s measuring stations to comply with international guidelines. At the same time, there is a need for producing a set of guidelines that take into account the special Arctic conditions, and for finding solutions to ensure that the collected data can still be applied in the rest of the world.

We continuously evaluate the suitability of various sensors for measuring under Arctic conditions. Because of the difficult conditions for operating electronic equipment and transmitting data in the Arctic, we give high priority to development of electronic measuring equipment. Improving methods for measuring precipitation is especially pressing. Updating knowledge on data transmission over large distances is also of high priority.

Training of apprentices

The workshop is also responsible for training apprentices to work in the electronics field in the Greenlandic society.
