The Hydrology Project

Recently, the political awareness of and interest in the potentials for hydropower in Greenland have increased markedly; both in relation to the power supply to Greenlandic towns and with regard to establishment of high energy-consuming industries in Greenland.

Asiaq runs 8 hydrological stations on the West Coast. The monitored areas are selected in consultation with Nukissiorfiit, the company responsible for energy supply to towns and settlements. Asiaq’s Workshop establishes and maintains the hydrological stations in close cooperation with the Hydrology, Climate and Environment Group. Data are collected in connection with annual visits to the stations, after which they are quality assured and saved in Asiaq’s database. Hydrological data from the database are available on request to citizens, researchers, students, institutions and companies.

The hydrological stations record:

  • Temperature
  • Precipitation
  • Water level (forms the basis for calculation of stream flow/discharge)
  • Water temperature

I a few places, climate parameters such as wind speed and direction, radiation, and relative humidity are recorded.

In order to convert water level measurements to stream flow data, members of the subject group carry out stream flow measurements in strategic places in the precipitation areas as necessary.
