The Weather Observation Project

Since the early 1990s, Asiaq has set up and maintained climate stations in many Greenlandic towns. Asiaq’s Workshop sets up and maintains the climate stations in close cooperation with the Hydrology, Climate and Environment Group. In recent years, Asiaq has been performing measurements in cooperation with the Greenland Airport Authority (GLV), in order to economize by merging stations.

At present, Asiaq collects climate data from 22 towns and settlements in Greenland. Climate data are transmitted by modem from the climate stations to Asiaq, where they are quality assured and saved in Asiaq’s database. Climate data from the database are available on request to citizens, researchers, students, institutions and companies. The climate stations record:

  • Temperature
  • Relative humidity
  • Precipitation
  • Shortwave radiation
  • Air pressure
  • Wind speed
  • Wind direction

In addition, UVB radiation is measured at a few sites.

The most recent climate data are available ”live” on Asiaq’s weather phone (+299 348845) and via the Internet at Asiaq’s Present Weather site.
