Ship-based Climate Measurements

Ship-based Climate Measurements

In this project we aim to test the collection of weather data from ships and implement methods to process and validate these data to obtain reliable records of air temperature, air pressure and wind conditions. An automatic weather station (AWS) specifically designed for atmospheric data collection from ships has been purchased and is operating on the ferry Marie Martek which travels weekly between Nuuk and Kapisillit. The data will be scientifically used and analyzed to study the temperature, pressure and wind gradients in Godthåbsfjord on a seasonal scale. In addition to scientific use, the data will be directly displayed on the ship and provide the crew and the passengers with instantaneous weather information. This project is funded by the Greenlandic Research Council.
